From the Lab: Enjoy Yourself

In The Science of Speaking, I cite Robert Cialdini’s suggestion that one of the best ways to interest your audience in your topic is to find ways to keep yourself interested too.

As it turns out, there’s research to back up this suggestion. In a 2009 study, researchers found that “teacher enjoyment and student enjoyment within classrooms are positively linked,” even after accounting for students’ pre-class levels of enjoyment in the subject.

What this means for you as a speaker is that the more you enjoy speaking about your topic, the more the audience will enjoy hearing about it. So get out there and enjoy your time onstage, and your audience will be much more likely to enjoy it as well.
